About
MayaMind is a holistic wellness service provided through the practice of social work and therapy.
My name is Fiona Owens and I have created MayaMind. I have been a social worker with over 25 years of experience working with people who struggle with life for a variety of reasons.
I have traveled the world using my social work and therapy skills to assist people from all walks of life. My passions are many and working in remote locations is an area that I feel most useful and inspired. I began my social work in London many years ago working with homeless youth. I then evolved my practice in the UK working in community mental health and child protection. I also had the privilege of working in India supporting women from disadvantaged backgrounds this gave me a sense of the transferable nature of social work. Moving to New Zealand with my young children I worked for many years with women experiencing substance misuse issues. I also worked in Pakistan during the earthquake many years ago providing aid to women in the inaccessible mountains.
Later in life, I moved to Australia working in a variety of roles including many remote areas such as Alice Springs and Central Australia, Western Australia’s remote areas and the Torres Strait Islands. Working with Australia’s Indigenous populations was a complete honor and gave me beautiful insights into the rich and various cultures of Australia’s first people. Realising a love of remote social work, I then traveled to the remote Pitcairn Island in the Pacific where I supported the small population on this isolated island.
Moving back to Australia, I continued to work in remote locations such as Mornington Island, QLD, and also in Brisbane working with adolescents. I have also had the disturbing role of managing children’s mental health services in offshore detention on Nauru – an experience that has changed me for life.
My areas of specialties include; substance misuse, child, adolescent and adult mental health, remote social work, areas of refugee and asylum seeker support, individual and group therapy and child protection.
Throughout my time as a social worker, I have developed such a large collection of tools and ideas to support people who are struggling with life and I would like to share them with you via my therapy and social work options in MayaMind.
